SOLARKIOSK – Enable. Empower.

SOLARKIOSK enables and empowers the sustainable economic development of Base-of-the-Pyramid (BoP) communities worldwide through the provision of clean energy services, quality products and sustainable solutions. Intertwining an award-winning technology solution with an inclusive business model, SOLARKIOSK fosters local entrepreneurship at the BoP.

The first SOLARKIOSK project was successfully implemented in 2012. Since then, SOLARKIOSK has established six country subsidiaries and is involved with projects on three continents.

Globally, 1.5 billion people live in communities that aren’t connected to the electricity grid at the Base-of-the-Pyramid (BoP). However, the demand for better energy services and quality products is growing, as many off-grid communities are located in some of the world’s fastest-developing economies within Africa, Asia, and Latin America. According to the World Bank, the BoP is globally the largest socioeconomic population segment (4 billion people) with annual incomes below US$3,000. The global market volume for lighting products and energy services is estimated at approximately US$30 billion (US$17 billion in Sub-Saharan Africa alone).

Many BoP communities are left in the dark due to the vast costs of building the traditional grid infrastructure in rural areas. Even with an established grid, connectivity is often unaffordable and unreliable in developing countries. The continuous costs of unsustainable energy alternatives significantly reduce local income and have a negative impact on personal health and the environment despite the abundance of sunshine in many BoP regions, which is the key resource for a sustainable and decentralized energy solution.

SOLARKIOSK has pioneered and scaled up a solar-powered technology design and an inclusive business model that are tailored for the specific needs of BoP communities and secure the provision of clean energy services, affordable solar products and quality consumer goods.

SOLARKIOSK establishes a lasting and evolving presence in targeted BoP communities through the local operation of the SOLARKIOSK E-HUBB energy center. The E-HUBB provides energy services, solar powered home systems and sustainable products in order to meet the specific needs of BoP communities with limited or no access to electricity. SOLARKIOSK is creating access to new business opportunities, while serving as proof that solar technology can be affordable, functional and efficient in BoP regions worldwide.

Worldwide Locations

The SOLARKIOSK company was established in 2011 and is headquartered in Berlin, Germany. By the end of 2014, SOLARKIOSK has established subsidiaries in six countries, all of which are led by local executives with many years of professional experience.

Subsidiary affiliates in each country independently manage all local operations and business development, including logistics, implementation, site/operator selection, training, supply chain, monitoring and support.

The SOLARKIOSK vision also aims to reach countries where a traditional grid infrastructure is already established, in order to reduce the global dependence on fossil fuels. SOLARKIOSK is initiating projects in Asia and the Americas, with the goal of maximizing the potential of the E-HUBB technology in a variety of settings.
